Parent and Stakeholder Notifications Summary, Checklist & Timelines

There are several points throughout the school year where parent communication is required by law, but it can be difficult to keep track of the dates or specific circumstances which warrant required or recommended parent communication.

The ESSA Parent Notifications Summary, Checklist, and Timelines document was developed by our National Advisory Board (consisting of state and local federal programs administrators) to assist with the management and distribution of parent notifications that are required or recommended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) within a school or district. This list of parent notices was developed based on a review of statutory requirements found in ESSA, ESSA regulations, and guidance. 

• Before the start of the school year, be sure to identify the person responsible for sending each notice needed (based on the unique characteristics of your school or district, it is very likely you won’t need to send all parent notices provided by TransACT). The person responsible for sending the notices ensures they are sent to parents according to the suggested timeline.

• Make sure your district is saving copies of parent notices for federal monitoring.

• Review the timeline with any relevant staff to make certain they are aware of what parents need to be notified of, and when this should happen.
